Backgammon Rules

Standard Backgammon Rules

The following are basic backgammon rules that have not been incorporated in our backgammon rules guide:

   1. The dice can only be rolled on the player's right side of the board.

   2. The dice have to be rolled jointly and must end up flat inside the board, otherwise they have to be rerolled.

   3. The turn is over when the player picks up his dice after moving his men, and only then can the opponent roll his dice and play.

   4. A player may have to reroll if he has rolled before the opponent has a chance to pick up his dice. This rule is not rigorously adhered to when the players are bearing off, or when an opponent's move is compulsory.

   5. In case of an illegal move, the player may correct himself, providing that the next player hasn't rolled yet. Faulty moves not adjusted before then, can no longer be changed.
